Adam’s Story
Adam is 20 years old and has autism. He started having short breaks at 55a Beech Avenue after hearing about the service through our ‘transitions group for young people who have recently moved from children’s to adult services. He lives at home with his mum and he had never stayed away from home before.
Adam was very set in his routines and his mum was not convinced that he would cope with a change. She was pleasantly surprised that he loved 55a from the start and he now has regular one night stays. Adam likes the fact that it feels like ‘home from home’ and that he can do things that he enjoys there, like playing music and being on the computer.
Adam’s mum says that having short breaks is the best thing that has happened to her son in a long time. She has noticed that he now communicates a lot more at home and says that his stays away have broadened his horizons. He is getting out and about with people of a similar age and is building new and stronger friendships. Having short breaks and community support is enhancing Adam’s life and his mum can also spend more time relaxing, knowing that he is having a good time.
