Jamie’s Story
Jamie is 20 years old and has Asperger’s Syndrome. Jamie had to move out of his family home because he had used threatening behaviour towards his mum and sister and the police had been involved.
We supported Jamie through the processes of registering and bidding with Stockport Homes and he was eventually successful in being allocated a studio flat. We helped him to apply for all the welfare benefits he would need to live independently and our team worked with Jamie to help him set up the flat and buy all the essential items he needed to make it into a comfortable home.
When Jamie moved into his flat he had never had any responsibility for looking after his living environment and had never cooked a meal. He also had a problem with his personal hygiene and did not see washing himself or his clothes as a priority. Jamie had no experience of dealing with money, paying bills or budgeting.
We have worked with Jamie to build in routines for keeping his flat clean and tidy, we have helped him to gain skills to look after himself better and he is learning how to manage his finances. Jamie is very proud of what he has achieved. We have taken things slowly, at his pace and, step by step, Jamie is building his independence.
